The project has been conceived by an awarded architect Piotr Kuczia. Its skeletal structure that allows for the even distribution of the floor’s weight on the existing building, evokes the image of a stork’s nest – the nest of a bird that is invariably associated with Poland. The wooden structure will be entirely made from durable materials by Steico, which, thanks to their properties, allow us to use smaller cross-sections that do not obstruct the breathtaking view from the stork’s nest.
Udabno is a picturesque village in Georgia, the closest to the famous David Gareja complex. Nestled in the semi-desert landscape of the southeastern part of the country, it offers stunning views of rugged terrain, with rolling hills, vast plains, and striking rock formations. The proximity to the David Gareja Monastery Complex – one of Georgia’s most important religious and cultural landmarks-adds a unique historical dimension to the area, making it an ideal destination for the thousands of tourists who visit each year.
The building features a wooden structure, utilizing compressed straw bales and a plaster made of clay and lime. The aim is to build a durable home that does not harm people or the environment and to use renewable materials with a simple production process. By incorporating natural raw materials, the atmosphere inside is healthy and human-friendly. The straw building naturally regulates indoor humidity by absorbing excess moisture through the clay. It also ensures ideal air circulation. It provides excellent insulation against the cold and maintains a pleasant coolness during hot weather.

The design of Storknest is driven by a deep respect for both functionality and aesthetic simplicity. Architect, Piotr Kuczia, the visionary behind the project, believes that true beauty in architecture lies in honesty of form. One of the core principles guiding the project is a commitment to simplicity and sincerity. The forms are unpretentious and the design embraces the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape, with the building’s silhouette gently rising against the backdrop of Udabno’s expansive plains.
Udabno is located near the David Gareja Monastery Complex, which serves as the gateway to this unique historical site. The village lies on the edge of the desert and is surrounded by an otherworldly landscape of rolling rainbow hills, dry plains, and rugged terrain that invites exploration.
It’s a unique, semi-desert ecosystem, and the architecture is sensitive to this environment. The third- floor expansion is designed to maximize energy efficiency while minimizing its impact on the landscape.
David Gareja and Udabno are easily accessible from Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, located about 70 kilometers (43 miles) to the northwest. Visitors can reach the site by car, with well-maintained roads leading to the monastery complex or by public transport.
